Since we are on the topic of traffic, we’ve decided to share 101 ways to drive traffic to your website:

1. Write quality Posts :

This is the first tip which anyone would give to you. A Quality blog comes with quality content. Write well researched and detailed information. A good post will not only be loved by your readers, it will also get you natural back links which will improve your search engine traffic.

2.Comment on other blogs:

Needless to say, commenting helps in many ways. Free Backlinks and also for personal branding. Follow one thumb rule: Comment only when you have some value to add, else if you like the post and want to show your appreciation, instead of just saying “nice post”, like or share that post.

3. Guest post on other blogs:

With article directory value decreasing, it’s always a good idea to start guest posting. With a clever guest post campaign, you can build HQ backlinks and also increase your credibility. For a good Moz rank, it’s important to get high backlink and also to your internal pages and now homepage alone.

4. Optimize your blog for search engines:

Alright, I know SEO scares you but believe me it’s easier than installing a WordPress blog. It’s like some good practice that everyone should follow. Learn about onpage SEO and also about how to give proper SEO structure to your blog. My suggestion, spend 2 hours a day for learning SEO and by the end of month, you can take care of most of basic SEO issues.

5. Participate in forums related to your niche and include a link to your blog in your signature.

Everyone needs traffic and share your strategy which works for you. People like other bloggers who share the secret instead of keeping it to them.

Email marketing has existed from long and it will be there for long. People don’t like to miss Emails, and by creating a targeted mailing list, you are actually making a fortune for yourself.

12. Write for tutorial sites – Like tutorialized.com, many of these sites can send you thousands of visitors per article.

13. Work on getting covered by the media – this alone can help you gain a lot of traffic.

77. Try to do free blogging seminars in your local area, collaborate with top people over there and let them help you gather people together – use the free seminar as an opportunity to advertise your blog.

78. Sponsor blog contests in your niche – this is a cool way to get backlinks and blog traffic.

79. Be a friend of all top bloggers in your niche – they can mention you once in a while thereby leading to more traffic to you.

80. Write an “Ultimate Guide” to something – this often goes viral thereby leading to more retweets, shares and traffic.

81. Creat a survey about a popular subject and publish the result out for the public to see – this will lead to backlinks and traffic.

82. Write a blog post listing the top power users on a particular social bookmarking site – this will lead to more backlinks and traffic.

83. Create a post that ranks people/things/place – e.g. “The top 10 cities in the world” (try to make this go in line with your niche).

84. Regularly create infographics.

88. Launch a traffic contest – tell several people to do their best to send traffic to your blog in a month. Make sure you give the top referer a price (the price must be attarctive if you want the best).

89. Create several great podcasts and submit it to itunes (with a link back to your blog, of course).

90. Try to make it to the delicious frontpage.

91. Have a facebook fan page for your blog – I didn’t know how much traffic I was losing by not having one until recently.

92. Always do a weekly link love post in which you link to 10 or more bloggers, if you do this consistently you will begin to get more people link to you also thereby leading to more traffic.

93. Always do keyword research before you write your posts – many people are missing a lot of search engine traffic because of this.

94. Create a mobile version of your blog – catering for different types of audience means more traffic for you, some people only browse from their mobile phones.

95. Create an iPhone app for your website – iPhone is very popular and you can leverage its power to your benefit.

96. Create a keyword-rich squidoo lens for your blog.

97. Create a keyword-rich hubpages hub for your blog.

98. Participate in website groups like Google Groups etc.

99. Advertise your website using the stumbleupon ads – the more people like your ad, the more free traffic you can get.

100. Put your blog address on your business card – many people overlook small things like this, yet it works.

101. Write great April fool jokes on the first of every april e.g. Google has been bought by Microsoft (people love to hear things like this)



How Websites Get Organic Traffic

Now that you are familiar with our website and you know the difference between a website visitor and website owner, we will dive into the digital ocean of organic traffic.  In a simple sense, this type of traffic is the best because it’s natural, meaning the person who is visiting the website wants to be there.  That person arrived by a search term or keyword related directly to that website that the owner setup.

Google and Facebook love organic traffic because that allows them to put relevant content to people’s news feeds.  Have you ever wondered why if you searched for a certain item on Google and then a few hours later you see an ad for that same product show up as a sponsored post in Facebook?  That is precisely why big companies gain demographic information, to Target ads to users.  Read this fantastic article about increasing your website traffic from Backlinko.

The other side of traffic generation is in the paid traffic arena, but we will get to that later.

Here are my tips for increasing organic traffic:

Relevant Content – Make sure your content matches up with your mission statement, website name, etc.  It’s okay to go one tangents to further explain a topic, but don’t start writing about unicorns when your website is about food trucks.

Website Speed – A newer indicator that Google has used to measure the SEO metric in website is it’s speed.  If your website is bogged down with large images, plugins, and widgets it won’t load well, thus increasing your bounce rate.  This means people who land on your website will not stick around.

Keywords – Even though Google has put keywords on the back burner in terms of SEO, I still think they are relevant.  If someone is searching for a specific term, make sure your article has relevant keywords to help users find that information.  Remember, the number one reason website visitors come to a website is for information.

Backlinks – This can be quite tricky because alot of people are confused about how backlinks works.  A backlink is a link from an outside source that links back to your website.  Back in the day, you used to be able to submit your website to a backlink generator and get thousands of backlinks.  This is now frowned upon because the backlinks are not targeted.  Remember that article about Backlinko that we suggested?  We created a backlink to their website from ours, making it a high-quality, relevant backlink.  When you write awesome content, people will link back to your website, therefore increasing the organic traffic and SEO.

What Traffic Means: Visitors vs. Owners

So in the last article, we talked about a brief overview​ of Traffic for Dummies.  I also mentioned that traffic can mean different things from the perspective of a website visitor vs. a website owner.   I’m going to tilt the table on this subject to shake some stereotypes up and allow you to gain a different angle.  

We will talk about the website visitor first which is what you and I are.  Notice how I said, myself and you.  We will get into that part a little later.  Anyhow, the website visitor is essentially a person (or bot for search engine purposes) who lands on a website from somewhere.  That somewhere could be another website, an ad, or a search term on Google.  Regardless of where it came from, the one thing that’s guaranteed about traffic is that the source of that traffic has a reason to be at that site at that particular time.

Website visitors are mainly looking for information, something specific when they visit a website.  Maybe they are looking for a tutorial on how to cook or fly an airplane.  People learn in different ways as well, for instance I learn with a mix of audio, visual, and what I call tactile learning™ which is a term I coined because I’ve used it for many years.  Tactile learning is essentially doing a task while learning about it at the same time.  You force yourself to gain a new perspective on an idea or task that you’ve done before and that creates a new learning curve that’s unique. 

So, getting back to what traffic means as a website visitor; it means specific knowledge.  Remember this because I’ll refer to it later as well.  
The website owner has a little different story as they see website traffic in a whole new way.  Now I can’t speak for everyone, but the main viewpoint that website owners see traffic is profit.  A business owner creates a website to tell their clients about what they do, for example.  The internet is capable of sharing product information, reviews, special discounts, etc much faster than conventional means which will grow revenue for the website/business owner. 

As I recently learned from experience is the website owner is as just as much a website visitor as a stranger.  Meaning, if they want the website to be successful, profitable, etc they have to look at the website through the visitor’s point of view.  This essentially is what inbound marketing is all about, but I digress.  I learned that in order for any business or website to be a real success and to even go viral is to create content around people’s emotions.  

As a website owner, in the past I was always focused about making the website look really pretty and adding all these plugins.  I found that over time this did nothing for my rankings or website popularity.  I wasn’t focused on the right thing, which was who I was building the content for.  

This is why it’s important for website owners to also be website visitors to really gain an understanding of their visitor base and create truly unique, engaging, and meaningful content.  

You’ve Landed on The Surface of The Internet

It’s a barren wasteland of websites, ads, social networks, you name it.  Or so we think.  It’s not barren at all, in fact it’s crawling with visitors.  People who are attracted to certain websites because they have a vetted interested in a hobby, sport, entertainment show, whatever it is.  

We see this every day when we go to check our email or log onto Twitter.  Information travels at blinding speeds and we can barely keep up with it all.  I remember when the internet was just Netscape 4.0. I thought to myself, what is this?  This will never catch on.  Fast forward 25 years later and the floppy drive storage is dust compared to the petrabytes (or more) of storage.  Of information.  

Where am I going with this?  Well, to be honest I wanted to create a sort of guide that just talks about what traffic is and what it means to people as visitors or website owners.  As a entrepreneur of sorts, I spent alot of time (11 years) tinkering with websites, programming, learning about marketing (I’m currently getting certified in Inbound Marketing), etc.  Why did I do this?  What’s the point?

The best way to teach someone about a topic is to experience it yourself.  That is what Traffic for Dummies is all about.  Education about how we use the internet, how information travels, and so on.  Keep in mind, this blog is designed for all sorts of people: people who just happened to stumble upon it and want to learn about traffic, business owners who are looking to maximize their strategies and ROI, or really anyone in between.
